How to find your Trusted Accountant for a successful 2023 tax season?

2023 Tax season starts in five days!

Many people can file their income tax themselves using software like TurboTax, UFile or ProTax, but not everybody is comfortable doing so. In addition, this requires having basic knowledge of provincial and federal tax rules and having enough time to spent preparing your tax return, with the possibility of making some mistakes and not claiming all tax credits you are eligible for. That’s why I strongly advise to hire a professional accountant.

If you haven’t yet hired a tax accountant, it might be difficult to find the best one as tax season officially starts on February 20th. However, here are some tips that will help you find your trusted tax accountant to successfully file your 2022 income tax.

a. Ask the people you know if they can refer you to their trusted account. This is my favourite advice since it is very important you have confidence that your income tax will be filed accurately and on time. This is the number one concern of taxpayers when it comes to tax season. Therefore, knowing you have a good tax accountant will help reduce the stress and headache of having to file income tax.

b. If you search online, read the reviews carefully as clients often accurately tell their experience with tax preparers, which usually is a good starting point. Specifically pay attention on how professional the service was rather than how much the amount of refund the client received, because every situation is different. If the professional does not have enough good reviews, my advice is to be sceptical and not hire until you find someone who has.

c. Another way to find your trusted accountant is to look for a chartered Professional accountant. In Quebec, a CPA is a member in good standing of the Quebec Order of accountants. Before admitting a candidate to the practice of the profession, the Order ensures that he has the required training, qualities, and skills. The Order then ensures that their skills are maintained through mandatory continuing education and monitors the integrity and conduct of the members. It is important to mention that the information your share with your tax accountant is quite sensitive. Therefore, you need to make sure your information will be kept confidential and secure. For these reasons it is very important to have a trusted tax accountant who will help fulfill one of your most important duties as a Canadian resident, with professionalism and confidentiality.
